Artificial
Somnabulism
The Marquis de Puysegur
learned the technique of mesmerism from Franz Mesmer and he compared the
trance-like state which was brought about by so-called animal magnetism
with sleep-walking and termed it as artificial somnambulism. This expression
was used well into the 19th century by such people as Edinburgh professor
of chemistry William Gregory, who also researched hypnotism. The Abbe
de Faria calleed the same phenomenon as lucid sleep.
