Bates Eye Method
American eye doctor William Horatio Bates pioneered new methods of improving sight without lenses and ways of healing eye conditions without the need for surgery. Although he spent the early parts of his career within the conventional medical establishment, he found almost no acceptance of his new insights among his colleagues. For example Bates showed that through his method presbyopia - or declining sight with age - could be arrested. He also believed that prescribing lenses for astigmatism was more likely to do harm than good.
When Bates was treating patients he found that astigmatism could appear, disappear and change it's form. Orthodox ophthalmologists disputed these claims. According to Bates; "The fact is that, except in rare cases, man is not a reasoning being. He is dominated by authority, and when the facts are not in accord with the view imposed by authority, so much the worse for the facts. They may, and indeed must, win in the long run; but in the meantime the world gropes needlessly in darkness and endures much suffering that might have been avoided."
