Food Intolerance Testing - Galway

What is Food Intolerance?

There is much confusion about the terms food intolerance and food allergy, and the differences between them. Many people speak about food allergy when their symptoms may actually indicate food intolerance.

As many as 45% of the Galway population suffer from food intolerance which may not be life threatening but can make all aspects of life very uncomfortable for sufferers. Food intolerance, also known as delayed onset food allergy, is due to an inability to fully process a particular food, usually making the sufferer feel unwell. Symptoms can be slow to develop and can take hours or days to appear.

Different types of food

When food is digested the proteins within the food are broken down into smaller fragments for easy absorption in the body. Sometimes larger fragments can pass through without breaking down, causing the body to react to them as invaders, attacking them using antibodies called Immunoglobulin G (IgG).

This may produce delayed and chronic symptoms. Food intolerance can be difficult to diagnose as offending foods can react hours or days after they have been eaten however it is rarely life-threatening. It can be managed by measuring IgG antibodies and eliminating reactive foods from the diet.

What Causes Food Intolerances?

People react differently to different foods. Food hypersensitivity can include:

Bullet point Classical immediate reactions known as food allergy which is mediated by Immunoglobulin G (IgE) antibodies
Bullet point Coeliac disease which is a reaction to the gluten protein and is detected by measuring anti-tissue transglutaminase (tTGA) and anti-endomysium antibodies (EMA).
Bullet point Enzyme deficiencies such as lactose intolerance.
Bullet point Chemical sensitivities such as reactions to food additives e.g. tartrazine (E102) and sunset yellow (E110).
Bullet point Delayed onset food allergy or food intolerance (the majority of sufferers) managed by measuring IgG antibodies measured using Lorisian Food intolerance testing service.

Common Symptoms Caused by Food Intolerance

Abdominal Pain Aches & Pains Acne Anxiety Bloating Constipation
Chronic Fatigue Depression Diarrhoea Dizziness Eczema Fatigue
IBS Itching Fluid Retention Headaches Hyperactivity Loss of Appetite
Migraine Nausea Rashes Respiratory Symptoms Restless Leg Syndrome Rhinitis
Sinusitis Stomach Cramps Tension Tiredness Urticaria Weight Loss
Wheezing Weight Gain Rheumatism Psoriasis Asthma ADHD

So if you suffer from any of these symptoms you could have a food intolerance and the only way to know for sure is to have your blood testing in a hospital standard laboratory. The Lorisian Food Intolerance tests use the ELISA (enzyme linked immuno-sorbent assay) method to detect circulating antibodies, which recognise and bind to purified food antigens. The ELISA method is used extensively in immunology and biochemistry. This technique has been shown to be highly reliable (95% - 97% reproducible) in detecting a variety of antibodies and antigens of clinical importance.

Understanding your Food Intolerance Testing Results

Your customers’ tests are analysed for food specific (IgG) reactions. Their colour coded results sheet shows them and you the foods they need to Avoid, Limit and Enjoy. It is important that you clearly understand what the results mean in order to clearly communicate them to your customer.

AVOID
Indicates you have a raised IgG antibody levels to these food(s) and should try to eliminate them completely from your diet. You may benefit from removing all AVOID foods from your diet, for at least 3 to 12 months.
LIMIT
Indicates a borderline reaction to these foods and may or may not benefit by limiting their consumption.
ENJOY
These foods can be eaten without restriction, unless you already know that they cause a reaction and you have been avoiding them, in which case you should continue to do so.

Please note: A positive IgG antibody reaction to gluten in the test is not diagnostic of Coeliac Disease
