What is Manual Lymph Drainage ?

Manual Lymph Drainage is a complementary therapy that involves the therapist using the hands to gently and rhythmically pump, scoop, and stroke the skin to stimulate the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system is located just under the skin and it plays a a vital role in the body's immune system and in the elimination of waste from the body. Unlike the body's circulatory system the lymphatic system does not have vales or pumps to push it around the body and it's organs. It relies upon the body movement within the body to dispel bodily waste products.

Manual Lymph Drainage is viewed as an important element in the treatment and control of lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is a swelling of tissue due to blockage or absence of lymph drainage channels (find out more about Lymphoedema). It is also believed to assist in the successful healing of bone breaks, torn ligaments, sprains, swollen legs and ankles, and headache.

Other chronic conditions such as sinusitis and rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from Manual Lymph Drainage. It is also useful for detoxification but it is not recommended for people suffering from acute inflammatory or infectious conditions.

What Happens on a Visit to a Manual Lymph Drainage Therapist ?

Before your first Manual Lymph Drainage treatment takes place a full consultation is conducted to check for any contraindications to treatment. Details about general health, medication, dIET® and hobbies will be also be discussed. The MLD treatment itself is conducted in a warm, comfortable room where you will be asked to undress down to your underwear, and lie on a plinth. You should be covered with towels throughout the massage, and only the parts of the body being massaged should be uncovered.

A massage that is very specific to your needs will then begin. Therapy sessions may last from one hour to ninety minutes depending upon your personal needs. It is not unusual for a client to nod off during the treatment as it is so relaxing. Unlike other massages no oils or powders are usually used during the treatment. Normally the treatment will focus on specific and relevant body parts at each session as opposed to a full body massage. The areas that will be treated will be discussed with you at the time of your appointment.

Following the Manual Lymph Drainage massage you will be given follow-up and after care advice. General lifestyle advice will also be given that is related to your specific needs, including some dIET®ary advice and muscle stretching. Some information about using natural products at home may also be given if your therapist deems it appropriate.
