What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a study of various points on the feet, hands, ears and face, but the feet are most commonly treated. The study of reflexology believes that the body is represented as a mirror image on the feet, reflecting every organ and representing it through a series of points. By using precise thumb and finger techniques while working on these specific points it releases tension and helps the body to seek its own equilibrium. This encourages the body’s own healing systems to activate, and restore the free flow of energy, and thus promotes sustainable well-being.

There is some similarity between reflexology and TCM theory of zones and the meridians. Throughout its development, charts were developed showing points on all parts of the feet. The right foot corresponds to the right side of the body, and the left foot to the left side of the body. The lungs are represented on both feet, whereas the spleen or liver are represented only on their appropriate foot.

It is believed that crystalline deposits of waste products, usually calcium and uric acid concentrate around the reflex points resulting in a ‘peculiar’ feeling at that particular point. By working on these points it helps to break down the deposits and encourages elimination and stimulates the circulation. It is widely recognised that stress is the cornerstone of all illness and Deirdre firmly believes that reflexology can be used as a very successful antidote to stress.

The need for a support system for newly qualified therapists in the Sligo area and so founded the Reflexology Network. The main focus of the network was to give support to newly qualified therapists, and to help them gain additional confidence and knowledge in the real world. At the same time it was an opportunity for therapists to get together and swop treatments while gaining the valuable CPD points in the process. The outcome has been a great success story which is now entering its 7th year. The network environment is relaxed and friendly. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Woodville between 7 & 10pm. In addition to receiving treatments from each other, the group have enjoyed talks, training, demonstrations, seminars, and workshops on various topics of interest over the years.
